The Lumberjack™ is a Group 3 uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) developed by Northrop Grumman to provide an affordable, modular, and rapidly deployable solution for modern multi-domain military operations. Designed for launch from air, land, or sea, the platform supports a broad range of mission profiles while operating effectively in contested and communications-denied environments.
Built around an open systems architecture, Lumberjack enables rapid integration of third-party payloads and mission systems. Its modular design supports both kinetic and non-kinetic payloads, allowing operators to tailor the aircraft for strike, electronic warfare, and other mission requirements. Integrated electronic warfare capabilities, a visual positioning system, and beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) satellite communications ensure resilient operation in disrupted, degraded, intermittent, and low-bandwidth environments.
Developed in collaboration with Empirical Systems Aerospace (ESAero) and Palantir Technologies, Lumberjack progressed from concept to first flight in less than 14 months and has achieved Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 following multiple flight tests and customer demonstrations.
